Comments: A beautiful older Catholic Bible, From The Catholic Press (Chicago:1950), 8vo - over 7 - 9 tall, this is the Holy Family Edition of the Catholic Bible, edited by Rev. John P. O'Connell, with illustrations by James Joseph Jacques Tissot, published with approbation of His Eminence Samuel Cardinal Stritch. Profusely illustrated with reproductions of J. James Tissot's two series of original paintings -- The Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ at Brooklyn Museum, and The Old Testament at The New York Public Library. The text of the Old Testament is Douay-Challoner text, the psalms and New Testament are in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine text (revision of Challoner-Rheims). There are no marks in the text. This family bible is chock full of other goodies -- dictionary of Bible terms; collation of New Testament texts; encylicals Providentissimus Deus (Pope Leo XIII), Spiritus Paraclitus (Pope Benedict XV) and Divino Afflante Spiritu (Pope Pius XII); indexed life of Christ with maps, timeline and cross-references between gospels; gorgeous Family Record pages (unmarked); illustrated introductions to the Mass and the family rosary. Th is volume is bound with either brown leather or leatherette. I cannot distinguish and other sellers list this book both ways. There is a crack on the back edge, another at the bottom spine, and a very small one at the top spine. This indicates leather as leatherette is (oddly enough) more supple. The cover has gilt lettering and embossed Cross, picture of Christ, and picture of the Holy Spirit, and the Bible. There is a purple ribbon, detached, which reproduces most of this. It is faded at top and bottom. A very nice gift for a Catholic family.
